چکیده

The observance of parity conserving time reversal violation in light quark systems could signal the presence of physics beyond the Standard Model. I discuss the implications of low-energy time reversal tests for the existence of such T-violating, P-conserving (TVPC) interactions. I argue that searches for permanent electric dipole moments (EDM’s) and direct TVPC searches provide complementary information on P-conserving T-violation. EDM searches yield constraints only under the assumption that parity symmetry is restored at the scale ΛTV PC associated with new TVPC physics. If parity remains broken at short distances, direct searches yield the least ambiguous bounds. In the latter case, improving the experimental precision of direct TVPC searches in neutron β-decay and polarized epithermal neutron transmission at the Spallation Neutron Source could yield tighter bounds.

Electric Dipole Moments and the Mass Scale of New T-Violating, P-Conserving Interactions

We consider the implications of experimental limits on the permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron and neutron for possible new timereversal violating (TV) parity-conserving (PC) interactions. We show that the constraints derived from one-loop contributions to the EDM exceed previously reported two-loop limits by more than an order of magnitude and imply a lower bound on the new ...

On Test of T Invariance in the Interaction of Slow Neutrons with Aligned Nuclei

Study of five-fold (P even, T odd) correlation in the interaction of slow polarized neutrons with aligned nuclei is a perspective way to test time reversal invariance due to expected enhancement of T violating effects in compound resonances. Possible nuclear targets are discussed which can be aligned both dynamically as well as by ”brute force” method at low temperature. Statistical estimation ...

Microscopic T-Violating Optical Potential: Implications for Neutron-Transmission Experiments.

We derive a T-violating P-conserving optical potential for neutron-nucleus scattering, starting from a uniquely determined two-body ρ-exchange interaction with the same symmetry. We then obtain limits on the T-violating ρ-nucleon coupling g ρ from neutron-transmission experiments in 165 Ho. The limits may soon compete with those from measurements of atomic electric-dipole moments.
